This may sound gross but go into the bathroom and flush the toliet and open the beer at the same time. One soud should muffle the sound of the other and depending on how much beer you drink you will already be in the bathroom should the need arise. Good luck!

Buy beer in bottles...bottlecaps aren't as loud as pop tops & the beer actually tastes a little better that way as well.

Wrap a thick towel around it and then open it.
Additional thought:
If you strickly use the cough cover technique you'll sound like a smoker instead of a drinker ......unless of course your doing alot of "cough drinking" then you'll just sound like a drunk smoker! lol
