I have found that most people my age are more into hip-hop and rap. Does this have anything to do with the lack of good bands?

It has to do with poorly bred (by pop radio and wicked friend's crappy CD's) young ears. Do you think very many people (and all over the world) will remember even 3 of this week's Top 10 songs in 30 or 40 years (even less likely, "hip-hop" or rap songs)?? It is true of rock. You probably know rock songs that are 10 or 20 years older than you,..because they endure and are still enjoyed on radio today,.. across generations! You may even know more rock than you think because some of your favorite "hip-hop", rap or pop songs are borrowing their very music (sampling), lyrics or ideas,..or are even remakes! Personally, I like just about all types of music (as long as it isn't ugly),..probably some of the same stuff you like.

People are lazy when it comes to music. The music producers are pushing rap and hip-hop more because it's less likely to be pirated. That means they have to get on the net and find better music and some people don't. MTV and VH1 no longer help either, because they would rather not air videos anymore.
There is:
The Von Bondies
The D4
Mooney Suzuki
The Forty Fives
Devics
Red Delicious
Poets of the Fall
Kelly's Lot
Valeze
Nobody's Star
The Faint
Kissing Tigers
Curve
Southern Backtones
Boss Hog
BB Chung King and the Budda Heads
Actionslacks
Jon Spencer's Blues Explosion
Kelly's Lot
Jet
The Blackheart Procession

That's 21 artists right there.

I will concied that Rock is not what it used to be, but I don't think that has anything to do with why Rap is so popular, credit that to MTV and the likes that have brought rap into the mainstream and turned it into the new pop. In my opinon rap and hip/hop is to pop now what NSYNC, Brittney ect were to pop 8 years ago.

Even though rock isn't as good many of the great bands are still on tour. Just this summer I saw REO, Styx, Motley Crew, Aerosmith, and Blue Oyster Cult. Guns and Roses is on tour soon as well. I think the best rock band still out there is RHCP, but even the weak rock of today is better than rap, which is relativly new anyway, especially compared to rock.

Not a rap or hip hop fan here.

As a rock fan from way way back, I will say that I think rock music has reached another stagnant point, where nothing much is new and original.

Of course there are exceptions, but not many.

I dont think its permanent. I have seen lulls like this before. It will take someone new and innovative to bring something new and original to the table for rock music to go on to the next level. Something groundbreaking.

It will happen, it has before.

No, it has to do with your generations lack of musical knowledge. Rap has never been, nor is it now, nor will it ever be, music. Same holds true for hip/hop.

I say this:

Rap is crap, hip don't hop, and rock will roll on forever!!

No rock doesn't suck. It's just not as popular as it used to be. There hasn't been any good rock since the early 90's.

Hip-hop is what's in.

It's much easier to "mass manufacture" rap and hip hop. When they tried it with rock, die hard fans didn't like it as much.

yea, you can't spell crap without rap,

that's what i always thought..

but it's really just what music you're into
and what bands you hear.

you can't say that ROCK sucks.

and 'rock' -don't you think that's an over-generalization?

you see, it all has to do with ignorance and stereotyping
