Tell them the truth, but try to emphasise any positive contributions you made to the company. I'm dealing with the same situation going on 2 years now unemployed. I have a college degree and can't find a job because of a bunch of government f u c k f a c e s.
Check out some of the rejections here:

4 1/2 years ago and you still haven't found a job. Maybe you should re-examine your resume and/or try another career. In an interview explain to them why you got fired. But learn to know how to put a spin on it. If you got fired because they were downsizing just tell them the company was in bankruptcy and was downsizing unfortunately my position was terminated and there wasn't a need for me. I have been looking ever since.
You never want to lie. Remember an employer can not say anything bad about you. All they can do is verify that you had worked for them on x dates and made x amount. That is all. You can sue over a bad reference for hurting your character.

First of all, that sucks....after 4 1/2 years of loyalty. Well, depend on what you applied for, it varies. From my personal experience, I waited about 2 weeks above before I got called, but usually one company calls, another followed , sometimes they called at the same day, or at the following day. When I waited, it was like forever. But don't just waited, go to temporary agency, and drive around.
I think if the reason you were fired was nothing to do with honesty, that won't be so bad.
I think you have to be honest, because you can get fired from the new company for lying on your resume.

Never give up. You will get a job and live happily ever after.
While looking for work do the following:
Get a realtor lic and just do open houses every weekend and you will make 50000 a year.
Maybe get a lic to drive an 18 wheeler and do that until you get hired.
If you are a women try a waitress position in a topless bar.

If you got fired, then you'd better hope they don't call your previous company for a reference.
