Your friend is bonkers. Don't listen to her. Don't what you want. If you like the kid back, then go out with him. Also, if you're shy and he knows it, then stay shy. He'll ask if he likes you. Guys also grab the shy girl if they think it'll make the bad part of the night easier. Keep this in mind. Good luck.

If he is a nice, good guy, just go to the dance. Besides you don't know your best friend's motives, especially an hour later she comes back to tell you not to go out with him. Your best friend might have been mean to Alex first. You were not there. There is two sides to every story.

Sometimes you can't be nice to EVERYBODY since some of them seem to have confilicting interestes. Stop listening to your friend. She is pushing you around. When people say "it's your choice" like that they really mean they want you to do what THEY want. They already made a choice for you and want you to obey.
It's nice to be supportive of friends if they are nice, but sounds like she's not being nice to you, she's being controlling of you.
Tell her it's none of her business who do you go to dance with. C'mon, it's not like she's super concerned about YOUR safety. She is concerned about her ego. Promise her you won't ask HER BF out, say this is all you can promise.

I don't see why you wouldn't say yes. The only reason not to is on HER say-so, and you question her motives, so ... yeah!
