What can I do to prevent this?

Perhaps it is time to change the flash drive.
Don't risk it, really.
You can try to move out all files from the drive, and format it.. make it clean..

Then see how it goes from then on. If still got problem, i'd suggest you get a new flash drive, before its too late.

if it's a new drive or you're positive that it works, try to make sure that no program is accessing the flash drive before removing it from the USB port. ORRRR.. (this happened to me once, and i regret it)... just to be sure... ALWAYS "safely remove hardware" from the bottom right. everytime you plugin a USB device, there's this icon that pops up on bottom right taht you can right click later.. good luck.

It might contain viruses in it. Scan it.
