I don't believe there is a "test" per se. When we present symptoms, often it is process of elimination (yes, on the doctor's part) so be VERY involved in that process. It may be something that you recently started to consume (say a month ago) or a new medication you started (say up to 6 months ago). You may want to eliminate certain foods from your dIEt (ie. chocolate?) and see if that helps, eat your last meal no less than 3 hours before you retire, don't lie down immediately after eating and you might try to sleep in a 'propped up position'. I found my acid reflux was related to a medication I had begun 6 months prior. I stopped the medication and the acid reflux went away. Two things: it is ALWAYS ALWAYS your option to stop taking a medication; and no, I did not take that little purple pill... although the doctor wanted to prescribe it. Good luck. Hope that helps.

They can do two tests. One is a upper GI where you drink white contrast junk and they take pictures while you are in different positions and while you swallow. The other is they can put a tube with a little light down your throat and take a look see. Both tests aren't that bad. A little uncomfortable for a while but, not the worst I've been through, for sure. I hope you get better with medication. Have they checked for H.Pylori? It's a bacteria that causes most ulcers. I've diagnosed 4 people that I know over the last few yrs. and I'm not a Dr. but when they asked for the test, blood test, they were positive. Good Luck

ive had many different exams to determine why i have acid reflux, and to start i was checked for ulcers. pretty simple, just blow in a bag, drink some orange nasty stuff, and blow in another bag. results goto a lab, and you find out if you have ulcers from that. from then on, i went to a gastronologist and received a colonoscopy and a upper GI with a low intestinal follow through. curiously ive never had a scope put down my throat, but i was finally diagnosed with a hydial hernia. i figure it really depends on the situation and the doctor.

properly, you nonetheless have the hiatal hernia, however the acid on your abdomen is now controlled and could no longer erode your esophagus as plenty. The pills are working to scale down the acid, yet won't treatment your hernia. possibly your hernia will strengthen rather now that it is not being annoyed by ability of plenty acid. Did he ever point out surgical operation on your hernia? The hiatus is an beginning interior the diaphragm -- the muscular wall putting apart the chest hollow area from the tummy. commonly, the esophagus (foodstuff pipe) is going in the process the hiatus and attaches to the tummy. In a hiatal hernia (called hiatus hernia) the tummy bulges up into the chest by way of that beginning. There are 2 considerable varieties of hiatal hernias: sliding and paraesophageal (next to the esophagus). Hiatal Hernia In a sliding hiatal hernia, the tummy and the area of the esophagus that joins the tummy slide up into the chest in the process the hiatus. that's the greater simple style of hernia. The paraesophageal hernia is way less simple, yet is greater reason for undertaking. The esophagus and abdomen stay of their popular places, yet area of the tummy squeezes in the process the hiatus, landing it next to the esophagus. even with the actuality which you will have this style of hernia devoid of any indicators, the threat is that the tummy can become "strangled," or have its blood furnish close off. frequently, those with hiatal hernia even have heartburn or GERD. even with the actuality that there seems to be a link, one undertaking does no longer look to reason the different, because of the fact a lot of human beings have a hiatal hernia devoid of having GERD, and others have GERD devoid of having a hiatal hernia.

Usually to be certain you have acid reflux you are given a Esophageal ph exam.
This is where they put a thin tubing down your throat
to the desired level and is scoped for acid reflux , possible damage it may have done thus far.

It may be just questions. Eat small meals and they should not be acid. A meal that could cause trouble would be spaghetti with the usual tomato sauce, or a tomato pizza. Eating too much, too fast, too much acid hurt. When symptoms start the worst thing you can do is to lay down. You want to sit up .

I believe you need to ask your doctor and they will have you fast for a while then drink some stuff and take an x-ray while the liquid goes down. Not sure what it's called- sorry.

They can have you swallow barium in front of a flouroscope to see if you are digesting correctly. Chest X-Ray and sonogram are typical, too.
