<3 is a heart, usually it is used to mean love. It can also mean less than 3, depending on how it is used.

most of these signs are sort of symbols. like <3 if turned 90 degrees counter-clockwise, becomes the shape of the heart; as in to show love....most IM users use these kind of symbols as a form of IM shorthand. you would find symbols like these almost everywhere on the internet, especially if you use myspace or yahoo 360 or facebook or stuff like that.
