I watched Hostel a while ago, and it has made me think. How is it possible that we, as a society enjoy these films. I'm not a horror/slasher aficionado but I've seen the mainstream run, including Saw and Saw 2. I also watched the original Night of the Living Dead recently (again), and saw George Romero's commentary about how, at the time, this was regarded as so gruesome, and that people were appalled and horrified. This movie doesn't even begin to approach the depravity of Hostel and the Saw movies, but we watch them and enjoy them (I'm talking about society in general - I know some people do and some don't, but that's not the point). What, if anything, does this say about ourselves as individuals and society as a whole? Are we really becoming indifferent to this increasing level of brutality, and if so, are we driving the movie industry to create these movies, or are the movies just successively numbing us to each act and thereby forcing the next director to up the terror ante?

I am with you on this. When I saw some of these movies; I was also appalled. And I am a nurse. But I do not work in the ER. I just can't take much of it either. Some make me want to puke. I have to close my eyes..and just image something else. Sometimes even put my hands over my ears. I have learned that certain movies contain "gory" and "bloody/slaher's" messes and are "quote graphic"..and I just DO NOT VIEW THEM. I do not go see the Texas chainsaw massacer/saw 1&2, even Nightmire on Elm st. was to gorry for me!! Oh, and Jason, I couldn't take that either, and Cabin Fever, Wrong Turn I was totally nauseated!! It is sad that our culture gets off on this stuff. I have 5 children and 3 of them likes this stuff! Two of them are like me and say no way! (GOOD)! I agree with you to a certain point that this could and maybe does increase our society on crime rates/ & level of bruiality. I do see this at the hospital where I work. Abused woman/abused people from fights or gang fights/gun shot wounds/ knife slashes ets. I don't work the ER, but I get the patients once they are admitted to the hospital to take care of. And I work allot with the cops to. So I know the crimes rates as well. Just saying...all of this volience/horror and all can't be ALL GOOD?? Just something to think about next time you view a horrow show.....Thank you for you time.

Most media is just a diversion; a diversion self-imposed, or directed by those with too much control over what others see.
Every time I even THINK of those movies anymore I think of Bruce Carroll's song "Elm Street"

"And it's 90 mindless minutes
of the best in blood and gore
They all come out laughing,
just can't wait for more.

While on the other side of
town a child 4 years of age
huddles up a weak defense
against his fathers rage
and as we spend our time and money on
Life's Moments Cheapest Thrills
In our city there's an Elm Street
where the nightmare is real."

Human mind always interested in fiction which are not common and they cannot see in their daily lives. It's a natural taste of the mind. Most of the men during their childhood days use to imagine themselves as brave knights who fight with dangerous villains and horrible creatures and play with their friends. Some of them wish to do such adventures in real life too. These interests never sleep. When they are unable to do those things in their real life movies satisfy them in a way. It's a spirit. If you take little interest even you can get that spirit.

I think it could be a bit numbing. But I think it shows what kind of whackos are in society and warns us what to look out for. I think the reason people like them is for the adrenaline rush you get when you are feeling fear. And because we like to jump into the arms of our date during the scary part as an excuse to get closer. I don't think watching a movie about a serial killer will make you become one, I do think it will make you aware of the fact that there are serial killers and maybe your mom was right when she said you shouldn't talk to strangers.

It is a cathartic release, to alleviate some of the everyday stress.
It's weird but it's true, and we just want to have a scare to distract us from the real world.
You are right, but sometimes you have to let go and enjoy the movies. Don't stress yourself when you could be relaxing your mind in other things.
Although I heard in the movie document that what happened in Hostel was true, that's scary!

We're human....and we are attracted to things that generate emotion...we watch horror movies for the same reason as comedies and dramas and action...they generate an emotion in us. Plus we like to be entertained by things that aren't real to us...they take us away from our reality. Jigsaw blows my mind...that guy is a f***ing crazy psychotic genius....or at least the guy who wrote him is.
