The vast majority of deforestation is being caused by urban sprawl. That being the case, we would have to stop people from moving to major metropolitan areas where the only place to build more homes is on the outskirts of the current inhabited areas. I see little being done to prevent this, however, many communities and larger cities are forming urban forestry programs to manage the tree resources they have. The urban forester's job is to promote the establishment of new trees and the protetction of existing trees and lessen the deforestation that occurs when land is cleared for development.
