http://www.Avast.com
They offer a nice free virus software that auto updates everytime you log into the internet. Its a commercial product but free to home users. It even has a voice that tells you when its updated and when a new version is released. You will need a license for it but its free by registering with the site. I have used it for a few years and every PC I build for someone gets it.
For a free product is one of the easiest to use and setup and best of all its FREE!!!
Next I would use adaware which you can find at:
http://www.lavasoft.com/
Ad-Aware SE Personal which is also free
Just my 2cents worth... hope that helps

Don't download things that you shouldn't. It's not the nicest answer but, it's true. Think of all the places you have visited previously on the internet. Then never visit the ones that are not crediable. Something like www.yahoo.com is ok, something like www.freesmilyfaces.com is not. Use a little common sense, it'll go a long way.

Install a virus scanner and turn it on while you are surfing the web.
Scan disks first before using them. Schedule a full scan of your system. Update your virus scanner for additional virus definitions.

I think a lot of it has to do with the type of websites you visit. If the site is somewhat strange or unfamiliar, you might be at a higher risk of virus. Just my 2 cents.
