I mean if someone knows that if he knocks on the door, he won't get a response, then why would he do that in the beginning. Because he does that, that means that the person whose door he knocks at let him think that it's okay to knock on his door late at night and so if it's okay, then why won't that person open the door or respond?

It's like you won't go and knock at someone else's door late at night unless you think it's okay or you think the person won't mind because that person lets you think that it's okay. So, if that person lets you think that it's okay, then why won't that person open the door??
