I recently became enthrawled with these tiny works of art called buttons. In the past, they were used to dress up clothing, not just as a functioning fastener that we know today. I have quite a few really gorgeous old pieces, and, being new to the hobby, I would like to learn more about it. So, I will start with a question about a term I've seen used in some on-line auctions.

Waistcoat is an old fashioned word for for a man's vest. The buttons on them used to be very decorative. There was also a watch pocket, and the waistcoat was also decorated with the chain and watch fob (dangle on the end of the chain that attatched the watch to the waistcoat.

that would be a button on a waist coat. /A waist coat terminates at the waist hence the name. If you look at old Eisenhower pictures while he was in the military thats a waist coat as opposed to a wasted coat which is one a drunk wears. I like shell buttons from the 30's bigger the better
