because my father passed away when I was 15. I was told recently that I could have kept receiving the checks until I was 22 since I was in college. Is this true? Am I able to get some of that money now if I could prove to them that I was in college? I'm 28 now. It would definitely help me out.

No you cannot , and they no longer offer the checks once you have graduated high school. I found this out 8 yrs ago , when my ex-husband passed away and my kids got checks only until they graduated high school. I asked them why , (Because I heard the same as you) and I was told they had stopped that policy a yr prior to his dying.

Up until you reach the age of 18 it is her money for you (like child support) But once you turn 18 you are an adult and the money goes to you. If the check is in YOUR name and only yours then she shouldn't be able to cash the check unless she writes deposit only on the back and puts it into her account. My suggestion is continue to let her have the money until you move out...more than likely it is what has been helping keep a roof over all of your heads but once you move out contact the social security office about the benifts in your name from your father.

I don't think Social Security pays in back-checks. I guess you should call to find out.

All you have to do is call any social security office or visit them and they will tell you.
