The other answers were good, but not controversial. Here's what you're looking for:
When Superman was rebooted (along with the entire DC universe) the various varieties of Kryptonite were eliminated. There used to be red, blue, white and gold Kryptonite, each with their own special efects. Now, there is only green Kryptonite which can hurt, weaken, and eventually kill Superman.
However, the fifth-dimensional pest Myxzptlk made something he called 'red Kryptonite', and gave it to Luthor, who exposed Superman to it. This was the basis of a bet between Myx and Luthor. It was actually an excuse to magically take Superman's powers away. If Superman could figure out what really happened, without Luthor telling him, he would get his powers back. (Eventually, Kent confronted Luthor off the record, and Luthor boasted of how it was done-- he didn't realize that he was telling Superman! Myxzptlk thought that was cheating on Luthor's part, and restored Superman's powers.) That's the back-story.
What's so controverseial about that...? Because of the other changes that might have happened at that time, if readers hadn't been alert and made it subtly clear to the publishers that they would stop buying the comic.if those things went through.
One of the things Superman tried to do (since his powers come partly from solar energy) was to re-charge his powers by stellar radiation given off by Starman (who is like a solar furnace inside and has the human form outside.) They had an issue where Superman and Starman were undressed and facing each other between a set of reflectors designed to focus all of Starman's energy on Superman.
This was making explicit what some had suggested, that if Starman unconsciously gave off solar energy, and if Superman unconsciously absorbed it, Superman might start thinking "I don't know why I like Starman so much, I just know that I feel good whenever I'm around him...!" And they would start hanging out a lot more together, without the reasons having been rationally explained or examined!
This would ultimately result in dumping Lois Lane, Lana Lang, Lori Lemaris, Lyla Lerrol, and all the many other love interests Superman had had through the ages, but that was not recognized as the loss of characters and stories that it would really be. (At that time, Clark was not yet married to Lois.) It may have been seen as a way to get Superman to appeal to a new market, one which had previously only worshipped him from afar.
I am referring, of course, to those men who look at Superman as a sexual object. By building up a relationship between them in this subtle manner, it could be made to seem natural and less objectionable, and the various arguments against the change would not be examined. But if the idea was not good enough to be introduced openly and honestly, it wasn't good enough for Superman.
I don't know whose idea it was, but fortunately we the readers demanded that Superman not be changed, and Superman has been preserved for another generation as not just a 'super-powered hero', but as an example of what it means to be truly manly-- powerful, yet kind; tough, but honest; treating the woman in his life in a courteous, hearty, healthy way.
Superman has 'saved' many people in the comics over the years. But this time, we, the readers, saved Superman by not allowing him to be changed in a dishonest, sneaky way that would make him into something other than what he really is.

How about when John Byrne rewrote the origin and history of 'big blue' himself!
It started as the comic 'Man of Steel" and was a 6 part mini series to 'relaunch ' the hero into more modern settings!

You might want to investigate the Law suit between DC comics and Fawcett, Dc it seems thought that Captain Marvel was to similar to Superman and sued Fawcett for Copyright infringement.

how about superman apparently knocking up louis lane and then flying off into outerspace for like 6 years to see if his homeworld was
really dead? Such is the back story of the new movie.

There was a Superman Annual in the mid-eighties in which it was somewhat revealed that Maggie Sawyer (Supes female cop-buddy) was gay. They showed her sunbathing topless with her lover. Good times.
