one pet store told me one set of care and feeding instructions, another gave me a differant set.
what is the best food and water conditions for the "long horn cow fish" a type of box fish?

Rule of thumb, don't ever, ever listen to a fish store employee, unless you are absolutely certain they have a clue. I've only known of 2 personally lol.

A salinity of 1.025 should work.

This type of fish is best left for experienced marine aquarium hobbyists with large tanks (~200gal as they grow get huge, up to 20").

If you've already purchased that fish I advise returning it, if possible. These fish can become highly toxic if stressed in the aquarium (the toxins they release can pretty much kill everything in the tank...including themselves).

Cowfish or boxfish get REALLY big and REALLY aggressive. Unless you have about a 75g tank or larger, you don't want to get one.
Trust me.
