Please be more specific. Do you live in England now? If not, where do you live? What ancestral records does your family have?

My patriarchal ancestry began in England/Scotland with the family surname of Marcum. After immigrating to the "New World", the spelling was altered to Markham. Some of the Markham's intermingled with the Cherokee in North, South Carolina, Alabama, and Georgia. When the U. S. Government removed the Cherokees to Indian Territory, registration of families being removed was a responsibility of the military adjutants assigned to the removal. My ancestry can be documented through U.S. Government documents.

Documentation is paramount to proving who your ancestors were and your relationship to them.

The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints (also known as Mormons) provide the most extensive and inclusive library and computer records of ancestry in the United States. The headquarters of this library is in Salt Lake City, Utah. These records are usually available to you at no charge. I do know that St. Louis, Missouri and Tulsa, Oklahoma have offices that can help you with your ancestral search.

Question is too nonspecific. Need more information of what it is you are looking for right now. If you are looking up geneology you might see if they have a Bureau of Records somewhere in the British Isles.

If it was a long time ago they were probably illiterate and did not know the correct spelling
