You will need another 256 MB stick of RAM to upgrade to your desired 512 MB.
You will have to get the same type of RAM as your computer supports! That is, DDR, or DDR2... or something even older, perhaps.
Also, make sure you have enough free slots on your motherboard to contain the new stick(s).

you need to find out if your mobo can have a bigger chip, some mobo's only can handle up to a 256 max. I think ddr and sd aren't the same. DDr is a newer type chip and costs more.
Don't know what prices are in India.
memorygiant.com can bechmark your computer and tell you exactly what you need and what your computer can handle, it's a cool site! That way you can't go wrong!

If you have SDRAM now, you will not be able to upgrade to DDR RAM, unless you have one of the rare motherboards that allows that, which is unlikely. You can upgrade to 512MB of SDRAM, however I am not sure of the cost in India.

One place I send a lot of people to is:
http://memorygiant.com
Even if you know NOTHING at all about your motherboard and memory you can go there. They have a great database and program that will diag. your motherboard, brand and model... Tell you what type of memory and size you currently have and what the max you can upgrade to, and how many slots your mother board has without opening up your case and looking inside. It will also give you a price quote which is 2nd to none in most cases. If you agree you can hit purchase and it will take you to checkout and send it straight to your front door.
I have used their services many times myself and its very very fast. Probably one of the best places for anyone to check out. Especially someone that knows NOTHING about their computer can get the answers fast and be done in a matter of minutes...
I highly recommend that site to anyone!
