In a few months I will be going through a quite possibly, ugly custody battle. I am getting an early jump on it and want to get some police reports that my ex has filed in the past (domestic disputes, etc.). Do I need to get my lawyer to go get those, do I need a judge to order the release of them, or is it possible to order them myself?

you merely go down to the police department and request them. There will often be a small fee if you are not invovled in it. It is open to the freedom of information act. You will just get the police report not all the evidence.

fr_chuck up there hit the nail on the head. Its public information and around here its only $1.00 a sheet. So depending on how long the rapsheet is, it should be under 10 or 15 bucks.

Call the police department and ask them their procedure for obtaining copies of police reports. They will tell you if you need a court-order or not.

it should be a public record. that is why they can post your name and or face in the paper without getting sued for slander. so i say you could get a copy. it might cost some money and or take time to get, but it is do able. you might even be able to acess it on line, all public recods are available online for a price. it depends on the level of info you want on some one. good luck!! doom
