The length of each side of a square is extended 5 meters. The area of the resulting square is 64 square meters. Find the length of a side of the original square. I cannot figure out how to put this word problem into a quadratic (algabraic) equation. I can solve the equation on my own, but need help with making the equation. I know let x= one side of the original square? I'm great with math just not understanding the concept of these word problems.

(x+5)squared=64
square root of 64 is 8 - x+5=8
thus x=3

P.S. the first answer is wrong because he is solving for perimiter and not the area

I think Mystere would be correct of you are looking for the perimeter, however it looks like the problem is talking about the area.

X = the original length of a side of the square
x+5 = the new length

(x+5)^2 = 64 since the area of a square is length squared

x+5 = 8

x = 3

the original side (x) plus 5 meters squared is the area (64) and solve for x
(x + 5)^2 = 64

(x + 5) = 8

x = 3

D. 100 square meters. You multiply two sides of a square to get its area. !0 times 10 equals 100.

Well, if you have 5 meters each, times 4=20. 64 - 20 = 44. 44 divided by four is 11, which is the original side lengths. You'd do...

[64- (5 x 4)] divided sign here 4 = 11

first guy was wrong, area of a square is x squared, not times 4.
x = the side of the original square
(x + 5) sqrd. = 64
root 64 = 8
x+5 = 8
x = 3

x = Original length of the square

x + 5 = new length of sides

4(x+5) = 64 (I'm multiplying by 4 since you have 4 sides)

4x+20 = 64
4x = 44
x = 11

So, the original length was 11 meters.

****The person below me noted that I solved for perimeter and not area. They are correct. As such I have left this answer unedited (except for this portion), and have voted their answer as a thumbs up.*****
