From the front lines: tugging at ear (although depending on age that is also a sign of teething), green runny snot, not drinking (suction hurts their ears), only sleeping while in an sitting up position (ie held over shoulder or in swing/bouncyseat), seeing discharge on their sheets or in their ears. Also if they scream out, once piercingly, in the middle of the night and have that discharge chances are good they burst their eardrum. Don't worry not a problem in infants or toddlers. At that age it'll heal without scarring that interferes with hearing. My daughter have only have a fever with her ear infections once and she's been having at least 2 a month since she was 6 months old.

Usually they will pull at their ear and cry a lot and be very fussy. If your child is prone to earaches then it probably is if those signs are there. Give the baby something for the pain and hope he sleeps. Most ear infections clear by themselves. You can put a little water with a couple of drops of peroxide in the ear, it will help. However if the baby has a fever spike on you you may give the baby cool baths and pain reliever so it's comfy. A diet of light food and lots of liquids, no milk and wait. As long as the cool bath or wipe downs and pain relievers work you're OK. See Dr. if temp gets above 104...that means the meds aren't working and medical attention is warranted. I had one daughter that would be fine one minute and the next she'd have a high fever from earaches. Sorry you might have one too.

Earaches do not have to come with a fever. If you have a small child that is too young to tell you that his/her ear hurts, then most likely they will tug at the infected ear. Ear infections or earaches are best treated by a physician, they will be able to see if it is irritated.

Babies will tug at their ear and cry. Also, pressure builds in the ear canal when the head is down, so most often, a child with an earache will not be able to sleep.

He will tug at his ear or put his finger in it over and over. It might also be red (inside or outside) and hot. Normally children will cry A LOT when they have an ear ache because it is extremely painful.

Try to avoid getting any water in his ears during bath time. That can lead to infection if his ears are very sensitive.

Best thing to do is take him to the doctor to have the inner ear checked.

Don't gamble with ear infections. I have suffered with them my entire life, starting from when I was a baby. Aside from affecting your hearing, they can distort your sense of balance. So please never, never let it go unattended. As soon as you suspect an ear infection take him to the doctor.

Good luck, I hope he's okay!

My youngest daughter always had ear infections, she never ran fever, and she never cried. But she did become uninterested in nursing. That's when I called the doctor, and they told me to bring her in. Yes, the poor child's ear's were severely infected, and to the point of bursting. She never tugged at her ears, or any of the other signs that babies show with ear infections. The pediatrician said that all babies are different.

My kids never ran fevers with ear infections. And they both pulled on their ears all the time, as a kind of comfort thing--sort of the way other kids suck their thumbs.

So the only way we ever knew for SURE was when one of them refused to nurse for a day or two. (Sucking hurts when you have an ear infection.)

We often suspected ear infections when they were extra cranky and had current or recent colds.

Really, the best way to tell is to get someone with an otiscope to take a look.

Good luck.

The biggest indication that i have noticed is the child waking up screaming in the middle of the night uncontrollably, and it doesn't stop until the paracetamol as kicked in!!! That's how i know with my son anyway, I've never thought he had one and been wrong!!! If you suspect that your baby has an ear infection make sure you take him/her to see a doctor as untreated ear infections can lead to hearing problems!!!

Usually if he is crying while drinking his bottle than he has an earache. If there is any question in your mind- take him to the doctor and find out. Everytime I wasn't sure if I should take my girls I was happy that I did. Sometimes they did and they got medicine and sometimes they didn't and I felt better.
