The law of detachment is
If P is true and P implies Q is true then Q is true

so
If you save 30 dollars and
saving 30 dollars implies you may buy a CD player
then the conclusion is you may buy a CD player.

Law of detachment is basically the following. If you are given something (x) and you then can assume (y) from this, and y is *always* true, then you can assume y directly.

For instance:

If you save $30 you can buy a CD.

x: You have saved $30

Implies you can buy a CD.

y: You can buy a CD.

You can then immediately conclude that if you save $30 you can buy a CD.

However, let's look at a similar example that doesn't work out.

If you like ice cream, you will like chocolate.

x: You like ice cream

y: Implies you like chocolate.

Since you may not like chocolate--maybe you like vanilla or strawberry, you cannot use the law of detachment here.
