to get a feel for speed an location and get concentration to see the ball the lighting is different everytime you step up to the plate and can take an affect on the ball it can play tricks on your mind with the bright white ball and the light so by taking the first pitch they can see the lighting and the other things

They take the first pitch to keep from making quick out and that way pitchers don't get comfortable in the game.
