read a classic. I've read Candide, Gulliver's Travels, etc, and their all good. It improves vocabulary and diction. Additionally, it introduces new concepts. I define "classic" as anything in the "Great Books" series by Brittanica Encyclopaedia

Read stuff you enjoy. If you like a book you read, for instance, by Meg Cabot, look for other books she wrote. When you have to read something you don't enjoy: try to stay awake. Just kidding, try to relate it to something you do like. Make up rhymes. Make fun of it even, if it helps you remember. Like, make fun of Christopher Columbus for not realizing he landed in the wrong place.
