Have you ever been to http://encarta.msn.com/ before? It's my favorite online dictionary/thesaurus/encyclopedia/etc. because there are no pop-ups, and it's lay-out is, in my opinion, very efficient. I looked up "portentous" in the thesaurus to find a word that I'm more familiar with that means the exact same thing, and picked out "crucial." So now I'm going to write a sentence using "crucial":
His participation was crucial to our victory.
Ok, so now I just change "crucial" to "portentous," and ta da!
His participation was portentous to our victory.
