I like to think that I'd have been on the side of the Union, as I believe that slavery was and is most certainly wrong. However, as I am originally from Texas, it seems likely that I would have been part of the Confederacy, and being only human, would most likely have found some reason to justify it; place and circumstance often cause people to do things in peculiar ways.

The Confederacy!
Contrary to what is taught in our history books, the Civil War was not about slavery. It was fought for the preservation of a civilization of people, a way of life, much like many Whites are doing today.
Not everyone in the South owned slaves. Slaves were owned by the wealthy. Many would be surprised to know that just as many Northerners owned slaves - more so because of the distribution of wealth in the North. The South was poor, resulting in the loss of the war because they could not afford to continue fighting.
The very President that everyone thinks entered into the Civil War to free slaves owned one himself.
It is very unfortunate that the South lost the war. The Confederacy would have been a much better government than the government that violated its own Constitution by attacking states that exercised their right to succeed as stated in the Constitution.
This should have been a warning to the people from the beginning. It is sad that we do not learn from the past.

Union--The war was fought by the North to preserve the union.
The Confederate States were after more rights for the individual states. ( Mostly their "right" to buy and sell other human beings)
The Quakers, and other religious groups, were and still are pacifists and conscientious objectors. Many of these people have gone into the military as medical personnel. Desmond Doss, a Seventh Day Adventist, was the second or third most highly decorated soldier in WWII.

Wow. what a loaded question. I live in the south, so I would probably be in the confederacy. Would I support their ideals? The person that I am in 2006, no. The person that I would have been during that time? That would depend on my own status- am I a plantation owner, trader, seamstress? Even if my livelihood depended on slave labor, I would have tried to make it as good for the slaves as I could have.

even though I lived in Texas, I would still vie for the Union side, just because I support their motives better. Or I wouldn't really care much at all, and probaly be a Quaker

I had a dream as a boy of four,a very vivid. real.shocking type of dream. I was in large tent, at a folding table, the flaps were pulled back and I could see the flags flying, outside.where I had placed them so I could see them. one was a battle flag of the south, I drew picture of it later and showed it to my parents. but they didn't know what it was, I found out later it was the battle flag. Southerners fought back the Yankee invaders.. to protect out land and our people and our freedom, it had nothing to do with slaves,.The north had slaves also, since the beginning of this country and before,The winners write the history books.read up some on the real reasons for that war. you will be surprised. to find out the truth.

I'd be Abraham Lincoln, and run amok violating the civil liberties of the masses. I'd probably take you out on a date with the funds I'd remove from the Treasury. If my ego wasnt flattered by the end of the evening, I'd probably have you arrested and tried in an unruly tribunal court.

I guess it depends which bunch of rich people you wanted to get richer. The Civil War was fought over whether the northern or southern would achieve financial dominance in the country.

Since I am black and even if I wasn't, I'd be with the Union b/c they are trying to make the nation whole while the other idiots want to split it up.

I would be on the Confederate side because i grew up in Louisiana. And don't say "you racist, you want slaves." Remember, at the time slavery wasn't looked down upon as it is today.
