Since somebody in La La Liberal Land watched CNN one night while stoned and heard the catchy term NeoCon I see it tossed around by the half bright angry left career students in a derogatory manner. Well Libs here's your chance to show the world why those 9 years you spent in college were actually worth Mummy and Daddy's fortune. Please give me your definitions and two examples of each.

paleoconservativism is "real" conservativism. Its for small, uninvolved federal government, and is usually different from libertarianism in that it supports "traditional" values while calling for limited government. Paleocons favor a more isolationist approach to foreign policy. pat buchanan and benjamin disraeli are two paleocons.

neoconservativism is the conservativism of reagan and the bushes. while claiming to be conservative, it actually favors a strong american presence in the world, and a strong federal government as well. One of its most infamous thinkers was leo strauss, who argued that government was justified in lying to its people on a regular basis. Strauss also thought that religion was nonsense, and that good politicians would know this, but that they should still support government-backed religion as a way of keeping the population under control. Whether or not Bush's administration calls themselves neoconservatives, their policies certainly are neoconservative, not paleoconservative: the terri schiavo case, trying to get an amendment to the constitution to ban gay marriage, invading iraq, increasing the size of the federal gov., increasing gov. spending, etc. There are a lot of neocon columnists and editors, but i guess the other most famous neocon thinker would be machiavelli (or maybe thrasymachus, who strauss favored).

Sure neocon gets tossed around a lot, but its gets tossed around by neoconservatives themselves at least as much as by their opponents, if not more. I think you should ask how many conservatives know the difference between the two. All the time I hear people back neoconservatives, claiming that its because they favor "small government." Conservatives, especially young conservatives, seem to be unable to differentiate the two philosophies.

The neocon thingy the libs use comes from the Irving Kristol Jewish guy from the mid-20th century who was a Trotskyist.

http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=%22irving+kristol%22

His son, William Kristol, is an editor of The Weekly Standard and co-founder and chairman of the Project for the New American Century.

To the libs, the "paleocons" are those who weren't or aren't influenced by Kristol and his Trotskyism. Kind of like the anti-WW2 isolationists, or like Pat Buchanan nowadays.

NeoCons have a raging hard-on for imperialism and social control. PaleoCons are more like Ron Paul, everyone's favorite goofy grandpa.

I asked for the definition of "neo-con" the other night. Not a lot of takers. Neo-Con: Me. I once marched for Rwanda (oddly as a Dem) and I believe in abortion and gay marriage. Paleo-Con: My 75 year old father who has been forced to go Libertarian. LOL How's that?
