if wal-mart is selling, Pioneer, NEC, Sony, BenQ, Lite-On, LG, Plextor or any other familiar sounding brand then you are in luck, they are great brands. I highly suggest buying a DVD+-r/rw. They are not much more expensive and are still able to burn CD's as well as DVD's. Make sure that when you install it, you have the power supply unplugged and that the drive is installed and configured the same way as the one you're replacing. As long as it's an internal drive you should be fine. The two brands I really recommend are Pioneer and Lite-On and you can get both pretty cheap with software from
http://www.newegg.com
make sure you get the retail version and that it is configured the same as the one you already have in there.

Any CD-RW today will be compatible. You should probably want to consider upgrading to a DVD-RW drive instead. The price is about the same and the DVD burner will still be able to burn CDs.

Something to keep in mind about the cheap ones is that they will fail sooner.
