My husband has a horrible looking mole on his back. I am scared it will be malignant. Do we see a dermatologist for that, or another kind of doctor??

We are new in town and do not have a general practitioner. The only doctor we have seen here is at a Ready Care center.

a dermatologist. Just be careful with your insurance. You may need to get a referral from a regular doctor first.

The normal procedure is to go through your family physician first. Specialists such as a dermatologist are usually more expensive and will have to do the same routine as your family physician but at higher costs. If the mole has not changed character or increased for a period of time, it is likely to be benign. Melanomas are a skin cancer and resemble moles. Your physician is likely to do a biopsy (taking a small sample) and then if any corrective procedure is needed, either excise it surgically or by laser (depends on size). See your family physician first.

Just see your family doctor, A GP or general practioner. Easier to get in and much quicker. He will make the decision if you need a referal to a dermatologist. Save yourself a lot of money and time.

general rules...if it's bigger than a dime
if it's irregular in color
if it hurts
if it has raised areas

then it needs to be removed. He will tell you most all else is cosmetic

See a dermatologist if you can get in to see one right away. If not have your family doctor refer you, he may be able to get you in quicker anyway. Don't wait, do it now!! It may be nothing but it really needs to be checked out.
