It's become more competitive due to outsourcing. I heard recently that average starting salaries are down for this very reason. Not long ago one of the financial magazines, Kiplingers or Fortune, published an article comparing the employment prospects in the IT industry of a college graduate in the US and in India - very sobering. Right now my company is only hiring new talent in India.

Keep in mind, this only pertains to developers. There's still plenty of opportunity for positions that require in-depth knowledge of the business, direct client contact, and project management.

I make $75,000/year doing web design/development at my job. If you go into web design, try to learn SEO (search engine optimization). The demand for someone with these skills are increasing.

Those with entry level skills make an income ranging from 25,000 to $35,000. Some others with very good skills and experience can make double or more depending on the time they spend. Some have a full-time job only, some have a full-time job on top of their own part-time contract business, so it depends on the individuals.
