Stripes are easy - mow in straight lines alternating directions... What I really want to know, is how do they get the checker-board pattern on the baseball fields. I've wanted to do that in my yard for years.
My neigbor does funky things with lawn chemicals too. Not my taste, but he does these designs by fertilizing only certain sections of his yard, and treating them with iron. Last year he had "scroll work" around the flower beds. It was cool. Looked like a French Palace.

It isn't just mowing your lawn back and forth. It is mowing your lawing back and forth the same way every time. Start at the same spot every time and make sure you always go the same direction, like first up and then down, and repeat. It has to have consistancy or it won't work. Kind of like having the same hair style day after day, week after week makes your hair grow in the way it has been combed.

You have to mow back and forth. Go one way then go back the other way. When you look at it, you'll see the grass passed over in the two directions, causing different colors

Some mowers have a roller that flattens the grass in one direction. This is what appears to be striping one side of the blade is at a different angle and therefore appears as a lighter/darker color than the other.

The direction that you mow will cause the grass color to vary.
Similar to when you run your hand back and forth over a carpet. One way looks darker then the other.

mow with a lawn mower in straight lines
the grass is pushed one way by the mower
so by mowing the rows in alternating directions,
you get that effect.
