My son will be 8 months old next week. At 6 months old, our pediatrician said we can start giving our son baby food, finger foods and mashed potatos. One day I gave him a zwieback toast and just the feel of it made him gag. He dropped it like it was on fire. He can't touch anything that has a course texture without gaging. Anything he puts to his mouth, he gags and then vomits... He can only touch things that are smooth and soft. I've been feeding him 9 oz of formula by a bottle with 4 tablespoons of rice cereal since he's been 3 weeks old. He suffered from severe acid reflux when he was an infant. Recently he has been taken off all medication for his reflux. He does very well on stage 2 baby food only... Is this something that he will grow out of? Do I need to call the doctor about this? Please, share your stories and advice with us... Thank you for you answers and sorry this is so long...

Even some toys or objects that we give him to touch if they have a rough texture (eg -napkin, paper towel, sand paper) he gags and then vomits... He only likes soft objects.

My oldest son i salmost 3. He doesnt have a problem with touching stuff, BUT i did take him to the pediatrician about 6 months ago, because of his gag reflex. From the time he was on baby food, i kept him on it for oh 16-18 months....but nothing with chunks cause he puked. now he is almost 3, and last week, he accidentally grabbed his little brothers toast with CHEEZ WHIZ on it, and he totally gagged ( but didnt throw up like ususal) he only eats very few foods. spag sauce ( no noodles), fries(if he doesnt have a choice), chicken fingers, pizza, PB&J, hmmmmm and i think thats about it..i tried to give him beans and weiners totally puked, then once i gave him chili i thought he woudl just think it was spag sauce, totally puked!!!! So long story short, you need to be patient. It is hereditary, actually!(so the doc says) and you just need to have the food around him, (or toys) and slowly but surely, they just grab something and try it. about a month ago, my son ate a hot dog for the first time, at a friends house, so she called me, it felt like a milestone was just crossed!!!! ( over a freakin hot dog) dont force anythng, just let him figure it out on his own, try new things once ina while, but dont force it. The touch thing has me baffled...bu the eating thing, doc said just be patient, he will grow out of it.

Baby Gag Reflex

He may have a problem with different textures. It is called sensory something. Sorry my mind is blank tonight. I would mention it to his doctor. Have they suggested speech therapy? I know it sounds strange for a baby, but they work with things like textures of foods. Eating different foods. Mouth stimulation with teething toys etc. Some babies are just more sensitive than others. My daughter is tube fed, and has just recently developed a gag reflex. Now everytime you put anything in her mouth she gags. And gags in between without anything. I had a niece that gagged on food ,meds, and other stuff. She did grow out of it and eats everything in sight now. if he is tolerating the 2nds foods and his thickened formula, stick with it and still try other things too. Try giving him things you are eating. mashed potatoes, mac and cheese(mashed up) Good Luck.

I gag pretty bad brushing my teeth and my dentist told me it's because something cold is hitting the back of my mouth first thing in the morning - I also am getting my wisdom teeth out to help the problem. So I think even if you don't have a medical conditio nas such you can still have a bad gag reflex problem with something uncomfortable, large or foreign in your mouth.

It may be worth speaking to your doctor - a speech therapist may be needed if the problem is severe. Try increasing the texture of foods very slowly - for example, puree a food, then mix finely chopped food into the puree. Try this site - http://www.homemade-baby-food-recipes.com/baby-feeding-problems.html - there is lots of advice there about dealing with gagging and lumpier foods.

My daughter had the same condition. I changed her formula to Enfamil Lipid for babies that frequently spit up. This helped a lot.
Also try giving him the crakers. I can't think of the name of them, but they are the one's that are kinda sweet and taste like they have butter in them. My daughter loves them and she seems to be able to keep them down.

he needs to be seen by an occupational therapist. call his doc and get an appointment, then ask for a referral to an OT.

i would try giving him different types of food, he might not like what you are giving him. i know my son does that too for attention or to tell me he doesn't like the taste. good luck
