As a 20 year resident of California, I can tell you the 10 second rule applies only to the very last homemade chocolate chip cookie in the house. Anything else, it's only 5 seconds. This is mostly to have a bit of extra time to recover from the shock and horror one feels after doing a 'victory dance' in front of your roomies only to drop the cooking in the middle of said dance.

Since I recently moved to Michigan, I have had to take into account things like humidity and discontinue the 10 second rule - if the cookie actually hits the floor. It is now 'trash' or fed to the roomie who is a chronic smoker of, well, "chronic". (It is well established fact that potheads have a 10 minute rule rather than a 10 second rule.) To make sure you do not become a victim of the gravity and microbe conspiracy to deprive you of the last chocolate chip cookie in the entire house, I strongly advise a bib with a pocket be worn at all times.

Nope. I work at a school for advanced high school students and (a couple of years ago) one of our girls completed her science fair project on this subject. She found that there was as much bacteria on the food after 5 secs as there was after 10, 15, etc.

It has more to do with type of food and type of floor than time. A taco chip on a smooth flat floor is probably okay. If you drop lunch meat on carpet probably not the safest to eat, regardless of the time.

the 5 sec (or 10 sec ) rule only applies to candy or pizza. Healthy food should never be eaten when it falls on the floor :)

there is no such thing as a 5 second rule or anything of that nature. It is a fools thing to believe that. once food hits the floor it is contaminated and not edible.

I guess the longer you leave the food on the floor, the more chance that a bug will find it?

took micro biology last semester. as soon as it hits the floor its not "clean" anymore. that would be like laying a french fry in a pile of poo for one second and then eating it....unless your sure no one stomped in a pile off poo in the last few days, and then walked where you dropped your french fry. but is it really worth it?

it depends on what the rule is about. if it's for food that's been dropped on the ground, then no. Germs stick to dropped food on contact.(obviously)

Nope, it's just an excuse to eat crap off the floor.
