I have aPavillion dv5224nr notebook with Win XP Media Center. Whenever I use it to play music, the player has a tendancy to freeze up. I cant narrow it dow no a program issue because it happens in WMP 10, Yahoo Jukebox and the Media Center Player.
It happens with MP3 files WMA and Internet radio. I have reinstalled the audio and video drivers and I have just defraged the hard drive. I can play games and do everything else fine, its just when I play music.

Not knowing WHICH sound system you have, I can not be sure, but I had a similar problem with a system that used an Ensonic driver. I don't remember which one.
It locked up everthing else while playing and sometimes wouldn't release without a reboot.

I searched around and found a different driver for the system. That solved my problem.

Hoped this helped.
