When a dog bites someone, it's basically the law that the dog must be killed. Another, slightly gentler way, of saying "to kill" is "to put down."
To put away would be to send the dog to the pound, or something like that, and you'd have to know that dogs that bite people are killed to understand that "put away" is not the right answer.

put down, dogs are pack animals. probably saw the child as prey. people forget that dogs are animals. once a dog has attacked a human (not in a self defense or protection of someone) it should be destroyed. the dog is proving that he is the alpha male and will do it again.
