I have completed a book on poetry, at first i was not willing to publish it but then everyone who read my poems think that i should publish them. most of them think i ll get alot of money as they are all witty and funny poems. As i live in a developing country and my poems are in english no one will buy my poems in my country. But many editors and people concerned with literature think i ll have alot of buyers in countries like America and the UK. I am 18 and i have no idea how do i contact these big publishers (readers of my poems think i shud) So can any one help me or tell me about the whole process... i have no clue at all and im still not sure if my poems really do have the quality like what others claim.

i would recommend that you self-publishing it. I self-published a book of poetry through http://www.lulu.com/
Lulu are completely free and very easy to use. You can then buy a global distribution, or ISBN, which will put your book on Barnes and noble, borders, amazon.... i really like lulu, i think they are great. They also offer a great customer service if you get stuck.
If you think they are too good to be true (which was my original opinion) you can view my book at http://www.lulu.com/dchooper
Hope this helps. Good luck with your writing.
For any more information about Lulu you can contact me at forensic_dreamer@hotmail.com (if you do contact me, put Lulu in the subject line, or i might report as spam)
Cheers, Deanna.

Any publisher that asks you to pay any money is a no good scammer! Real publishers never ask the author to pay out any money, and they themselves will cover all costs of publication and distribution because they believe your book will make them money. Buy a copy of the Writers and Artists' Yearbook Guide to getting published - they will have a long list of publishers/publishing houses you can get in contact with.

Poetry is very hard to publish, and it's even harder if you're trying to oublish across national boundaries. Rather than starting with a book, try publishing your poetry in magazines to get your name known; if your work is strong enough, it may attract publishers. And despite what one previous respondent said, don't bother with an agent—poetry is a low-return enterprise, and unless you're wildly famous it will turn out too little money to interest an agent.

And I hate to break it to you, but you probably won't make very much money publishing poetry. There are a lot of poets out there and not very many readers; most poetry publishers are heavily subsidized by institutions and grants, and most poets need to have a day job. Publishing poetry will help you gain acclaim and recognition, but it won't earn you very much money, if any.

Get a copy of The Writers and Artists Yearbook in your local library. This is full of useful information and gives a list of publishers and the types of manuscripts they accept. Most publishers prefer to get manuscripts via a literary agent but do still accept unsolicited material. Make sure that you have your manuscript typed in double space. Do not send it all just some good pieces (if a book first two chapters) if they are interested they will ask to see the rest. Make sure you keep a copy a sthey may not return it to you.

Oh boy, if it was as easy as that! It's like someone saying, 'I want to be in the movies'! Unless you're very, very lucky, your work will end up on the heap if you haven't got some sort of contacts. Still you can try. You can try playing the 'developing country' aspect. You can find publishers' and agents' names on the web. Or else get some money some other way and go for self-publishing.

In all honesty, poetry has a very poor market in our country (America). Very few publishers will publish volumes of poetry because they don't bring in a lot of profit for the publisher.

While I am sure you are very talented, you might have to undertake the publishing yourself. Buy a Writer's Market, or Poetry Market, both by Writer's Digest to help you find someone who will at least take a look at what you have.

Try starting with a blog to get yourself know, then look for a publisher.
