is it the ratio of how many games you won to how many you lost? does it matter the level of the opponent? does it matter how many total games you played?

if you win a game against a higher rated player you gain more points, if you lose. its less points off your rate.
it is based on rates of people you play against.
lower rated player you win less or lose more. number of games really doesn't inter into it.except you have to play 20 rated games to get out of provisional stage.

It has to do with the strength of your opponents, so you could have a losing record, but if you're playing highly-rated players, you will still have a relatively high ranking. But winning helps, especially if you want to reach 2000.

A one-on-one rating calculation is made between the winner and each loser. The rating change for each result is added to the winner's rating. Each loser's rating is only affected by the one-on-one calculation against the winner.
