I've had 2 pregnancies and both did a 6 week internal ultra sound. Feels like a pap. It just confirms the pregnancy, if you have multiples, and can usually see a heart beat. Other than that, baby just looks like a lima bean. You can't tell the sex of the baby until about 16-20 weeks when a more detailed ultrasound is scheduled.

My first exam the doctor only did an internal exam, along with a urine test just to be sure. He then scheduled me for an ultrasound at 12 weeks. You really don't want to have an excessive amount of ultrasounds and at 6 weeks there isn't a whole lot to see yet, unless there is or is a suspected problem. So, you also won't have one every visit either.
Good Luck!

It is very common for the doctor to make your first ultrasound appointment at 6 weeks. Have you discussed with your doctor if the hospital you will be delivering at will do circumsing if you deliver a baby boy? Keep me posted. I have a 8 year old girl & a 4 year old son. I'm hoping to be expecting again real soon also. I'd like to know how everything goes. ddreece@sbcglobal.net

It really depends on your doctors office. I didn't have an ultrasound until I was 20wks with my first. With my second pregnancy I was 10wks. They did my second ultrasound because I wasn't sure how far along I was. I lost the second baby on the ultrasound there was no heartbeat. Tell the to take very good care of you and your baby.

Well, I've got my first exam tomorrow. I'm not sure how far I am (I think 8 weeks) but, I believe tomorrow they will schedule the ultrasound.
I think they wait awhile because many women loose their babies within the first 10 weeks. I think they normally do the ultrasound at 10 - 12 weeks. But, I'm not sure, I'm learning all of this as I go as well.
Congratulations on your pregnancy!

A doctor doesn't usually do one at this stage, but my OB-GYN did a vaginal ultrasound as part of his protocol. I would suggest giving the office a call and asking them what they do.
Congratulations on your pregnancy and I wish you a happy and healthy baby...

I've known women to get ultrasounds that early in pregnancy. However, don't be surprised if they say that they see a sac but no fetal pole -- it's still SOO early to have an ultrasound.

It's a little too early for an ultrasound, but they will probably give you an internal exam.
Best wishes to you and your baby

At your first visit the doctor should do an internal examination (so don't forget to wash - hehe) as well as an ultrasound. Alhtough many doctor's defer in their methods. My doctor did the ultrasound although it wasn't as "clear" as the one in the hospital.
Congrats!
