I've heard this all my life, but it's pronounced "catty-wampus", as a variation of catty-corner here in the Southern USA

Actually, the correct spelling is "catawampus". It is used as "diagonally across" but the most common use is "askew" or "wrong". My boyfriend uses it alot, i think its cute. I never heard anyone use it until him, but he's not from around here (New York, he was born in Colorado) and maybe its more common there. He uses it as the "askew" meaning.

"Kitty wampus" and "wapper-jawed"! I use them both when something is "outta-wack" or just plain screwed up!
