A psychiatrist is a medical doctor. A psychologist may hold a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) and be called "doctor"; but, is not a medical doctor (M.D.).

A psychologist primarily aids the depressed patient by counseling and psychotherapy. A psychiatrist may also perform psychotherapy; but, in addition, can prescribe medications and perform ECT (electroconvulsive, or shock therapy).

A psychiatrist is a doctor with a medical degree which allows them to write prescriptions. They will usually send 5 minutes with you and write a prescription which they don't really know if it will work or not. That is about all they will do for you.

A psychologist also has a doctorate but cannot write prescriptions. They will spend about 40 to 45 minutes with you and provide support and encouragement to find ways to help you work through your problems.

If you have to pick between the two start with a psychologist. They are much better trained in dealing with people. If they feel you need medication they will refer you to the psychiatrist. With a Psychologist at least you are getting more for your money.

Psychologists have earned a doctoral level degree (Ph.D., Psy.D., or D.Ed.) in Psychology, after having obtained a Bachelors degree and a Masters degree in Psychology. This amounts to at least nine years of university education and training in psychology. Psychiatrists have a general medical degree first (4 years at the undergraduate level) and then advanced training in psychiatry (usually 4 years residency after the M.D. degree).

Psychologists can do psychological testing with well-researched tests. Psychiatrists typically do not do psychological testing.

Psychiatrists can prescribe medication, while in Ontario, Psychologists cannot.

Psychologists are regulated by the College of Psychologists of Ontario while Psychiatrists are regulated by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

Now a days the division of labor is such that in community mental health clinics, psychiatrists monitor psychotropic medications for the client, the psychologists administer mental health tests, and masters level social workers and counselors provide the mental health therapy. Now a days social workers provide about 70 to 80 percent of the therapy in this country because the insurance companies and government avoids paying the higher rates charged by PhD level psychologists, and MD level Psychiatrists.

A psychiatrist has to go to medical school. They are allowed to prescribe patients medicine. Psychologists do not have to go to medical school so they cannot prescribe medicine. Both try to help people deal with emotional problems, mental problems, etc.
