Formatting is a last resort to be honest.
sounds to me like you have a malware/adware infection ..
Try this first :-
goto start menu, then 'run' , type msconfig in the box and press enter. thats starts microsoft config utility. click on startup tab, this will list all the program that start with windows.
If there are any that dont have names, start from a 'Temp' folder or look like you dont recognise them untick them.
This wont delete them just stop them starting.
Then clear your Temp folders.
Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.
Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.
Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.
Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.) and C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.'
To flush the XP system Restore Points.
Go to Start>Run and type msconfig. Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button. On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left. Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.
Reboot. Scan your system using the links below ( one after the other to ensure the system is clean.
Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created. Note that all previous restore points will be lost.
I used NOD32 as a resident scanner but have found through experience ( I work in the computer industry) that no one scanner is enough, so use a combination of web based virus scanners that are free ( for the most part anyway) http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html is amongst the best, Panda Active scan - http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan? is also good ( their pro version is better but needs a small charge) and

hope this helps.

The main thing to remember is if you get your computer clear of the fake anti-spyware program, never click on one of these pop-up things. If you hit the "X" to close them, they just go in a loop, and keep prompting you. You can just give up,and in a effort to just make it go away, end up hitting "OK" and let the filthy evil crap download into your box. Please don't do that! If necessary just open task manager, and kill your browser process. These things you pick surfing are like Dracula. You have to LET them in. By the way it may not be all that bad. check you add/remove programs and see if there is something new there that you did not download.(on purpose!) It is probally no good to try and uninstal it,but you can try. Also Malwarebytes has a free program called Rogue Remover that might help. If you download Rogue remover and the program in you Add/remove programs list does not match any of those in Rogue removers list of targeted bogus programs, try running it anyway. the same rip-off ware can go by a lot of different names. Also the advise for Avira Ant-vir is very good. It will not allow you to click download for this kind of Judas program. folks are also right about chunking IE and getting FireFox. Good Luck!

Had EXACTLY the same problem. Didn't matter how I tried to delete it, it was still there. But, I have just realised when I read your question that it seems to have vanished of its own accord. I don't know what I have done. I did run EvidenceNuker, perhaps that did it.

Ive 6years experience in computer support, for this problem I recommend you format the computer and reinstall everything back onto it, this way you will swipe any viruses from your system. Don't forget to backup your work first.

Your computer has a Smitfraud infection. You will need to use a specialised removal tool such as SmitFraudFix v2.111:
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix_En.php
or
RogueFix:
http://www.internetinspiration.co.uk/roguefix.htm
To remove this pest.
Both are free!
Good luck.
