It is a metal insert fireplace. The house is about 10 years old, with a very steeply pitched roof. The top of the chimney is a bit below the highest peak of the roof. The chimney has had about a foot added to extend it, but that didn't seem to help.

I've had my chimney swept, but still have the problem with the draw. I also have the insert. So, what I do is open the flue, open a window, then start the fire. Once it starts burning, it will heat up the chimney and it will draw the smoke up the chimney. Then I close the window and everything works okay.

My fireplace also has a blower to help heat the room. Don't start the blower until the the chimney is heated and the smoke is being drawn up. Also, my chimney has a little latch that I must open (in addition to opening the flue). This latch opens a little "vent" that allows outside air to come into the fireplace and help fuel the fire and create the updraft. I don't know if all fireplaces have this, but mine is hidden in the fireplace against the left side. I have to turn it 90 degrees, then pull it towards me. Again, I don't know if you have one of these latches; I only offer this in case it applies to your fireplace.

The part of the chimney between the opening and the flue is called the gather. It is possible that there is some kind of breach or damage at this point in the chimney.Employ the services of a HETAS registered solid fuel engineer to survey the chimney for correct sizing or damage.

Call a good chimney cleaner and have it cleaned out. He can also check your chimney and determine whether or not it needs to be modified or what you should do to make it draw better if there are other issues other than needing a good cleaning.

your supposed to have your chimney swept at least once a year. I didn't know that and once I lit a fire and the whole house filled up with smoke and so I called the fire department and they had to crawl up in my rafters to blow out the house and in doing that they cracked the whole ceiling it was a mess.... the moral of my story is just pay the $100 and have it cleaned

Have you had the flew checked? When was the past time you had it cleaned? Possibly something stuck or nesting in the chimney?
