My son will be choosing a Boy Scout Troop next year? What are important considerations in choosing one troop over another? What questions would you ask to see if it is a good troop to join?

As an Eagle Scout, ex-Scout dad, and ex-Scout leader, I'd look for:

- A strong activity program- something going on all the time that is interesting to your son.

- A strong summer program- good summer camps, High Adventures, something exciting.

- Good youth leadership. Who is REALLY in charge? The Senior Patrol Leader or the Scoutmaster?

- Strong patrols. Do the patrols have real identities? Do the patrols do things apart from the troop?

- KEY ISSUE: Probably the MOST IMPORTANT THING is how does your son get along with others in the troop? It can be a great troop, but if he feels a little unwelcome or like an outsider, it won't work.

- Is there a role for you? What would your relationship with the troop be, and is it something you'd like?

On a lesser note, I'd look for things like:
- solid fundraising program you can support
- well-run meetings
- good record of advancement for most of the Scouts
- good participation in district and council-level events (do the leaders go to Roundtable, etc.?)

I love the answer above mine. He really nails it. I have to say one thing though, be grateful that he has choices. And that there are adults willing to give their time for your son. Boy and Girl Scout troops are hard to come by around here, seems to be "too hard" for most adults. Shame.
Whichever troop he decides, please please be active and help that troop. Your son will have a much better experience if his parents are on his side and are just drop-and-run parents.
