My basement has an existing egress window but I am a little bit confused on the building code on whether a seperate egress window (for the bedroom) is needed when I add a new bedroom. Can I just build a new bedroom just right next to the existing egress window?

No building permit yet... its on the planning stage, need to know the cost of adding an egress window since it will require to cut concrete wall. Should I just build the bedroom where the existing egress window is located?

Uniform Building Codes require an egress window in each and every basement bedroom. Any room built with a closet could be defined as a bedroom by the inspector. Including cost of cutting concrete, window, window well, and labor, the costs will be in excess of $2000

I don't see how it will be possible to have an egress window inside a basement bedroom. Is it possible to put a second door into the room next to the egress window? If so, that is the way to go. If this bedroom will be for a teenager, the likelyhood of a fire increases. Therefore, it would be recommended that you take every precaution necessary to ensure the saftey of the inhabitant.

Good Luck!

You need and should have one. You will hate yourself if you have a fire and the person in the room with out an egress window does NOT get out. It happened to a distant friend.

Got to have a window egress. Do you have a building permit?

I would stay out of cutting into concrete. You risk running into structural issues. You have to ask the local building department on this one. It varies from town to town.

probably ok if the br has a 3'0" door ( door removed from hinge of course ), & lighted fire exit signs pointing to window!
