The guideline is supposed to be 10 minutes per grade, so 40 minutes. However, according to some research, there should be no homework until high school. A large case study was done a few years ago that found homework in the elementary grades did not serve any positive purpose, it just increased student's dislike of school and did not actually increase learning. The only homework the study recommended was something of a project nature- no "practice" pages or worksheets. It indicated that the only time it should be used was high school since they were old enough to do independent work and elementary students would need parental help which translates into parental do it.

between 30-45 minutes, after that they max out and dont really get anything out of it and the whole purpose of homework is to help remember things learned in school.

i have 3 children and each of them went to different schools
each school district, teacher have different expectations
my son is learning disabled and his teacher only assigned usually 30 min reading about 10 math problems or one other subject assign
but ck with your school district to see if they have a specific amt they require or suggest and if your child is learning disabled, or struggling ck with the individual teacher.
my older daughter was in a math/science magnent program and usually had about one hour of regular homework, and 30 min worth of reading each day
my youngest daughter was in a full gate(gifted and talented program)and was expected to do at least one hour of homework each day in a variety of subjects, along with at least one major or seveal smaller projects to be on-going for the month. not including reading that needed to add up to at least 3 hrs each week.
