here are some links that will help you in your research.

also, the last link has to do with the WPA, Works Progress Administration, which was a government program supporting art & photography during the depression. they offered a lot to photographers during that time. much success of artists is due to this program.

The camara obscura was discovered by the chinese and the greeks in ancient times. Optics evolved mainly between the XIII to the XVIII century. Also during the XVIII century it was discovered that certain chemics were sensitive to light exposure.
arround 1816 Joseph-Nicephore Niepce begun his intempts first to achive a printed image by chemical means, and then to make such pictures last. The first extant photography shows the view of a window, taken by Nipce c.1826.
James Clark Maxwell begun experimenting with colour photography arround 1855, obtaining the first colour photography (a tartan fabric ribbon, mainly red and blue) whose colours remained during 1861.
Before this, photography was already taken as an art by many.
Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii took iincredible colour photographs (1905-1915).
Digital photography (non chemical) work on a diferent principle and has only a few decades.
I recomend to search in the web some of the names, etc I just mentioned.
Thats all I remember, I hope this turns out to be helpfull.
Good luck.
