1998 BMW. Garaged. Synthetic motor oil. Stored for approx. 18mo. Garage temperature may have exceeded 100deg F during summer months.

I'd like to get it back on the road, however I am extremely concerned that attempting to turn the engine will cause it to seize. It has not been started for a very long time.

Should I be concerned about turning the engine?

Is there any preventative measure that I can take prior to attempting to start the car?

Advice would be much appreciated.

If it hasn't already seized, you mean. It should have "pickled" before storage. Pull the spark plugs and put about 2 ounces of Marvel Mystery oil in each cylinder and let it set overnnight. Crank it over a few turns to blow out the excess before installing the plugs. It will smoke like crazy until all the oil burns off, but it might keep it from seizing. If it has already seized, you might have to turn it over with a breakover handle and socket on the crankshaft bolt to get unstuck.

Well there is the low down when it comes to siezing when a car is stored the good thing is that you are using synthetic so the oil is probably still clinging to engine components....just start it and let it run ...DO NOT REVV IT for a good 15min just let it idle until it reaches operating temperature...it should be ok as long as the oil pump is working ....nothing to worry about here.... good luck and let me know how it turns out....WHAT EVER YOU DO DONT REMOVE THE SPARK PLUGS AND SPRAY ANYTHING IN THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER ....DONT LISTEN TO SOME OF THESE PEOPLE IN HERE I THINK THEY ARE LOONIE IN THE HEAD.....

Check your fluid levels ...clean the cobwebs out from under the hood and while you're in there look for engine components that look rusted or corroded. if nothing appears rusted and corroded , then change the oil as it may have collected condensation and now have moisture in it and also add some gas additive for moisture ( get it at the local auto zone). Then top up the brake fluid and transmission fluid and coolant if they need it and try starting it up.

take the spark plug's out and put about a half teaspoon of wd-40 oil in each cylinder , change your oil, may smoke a little while but that helps to unseize a engine

,it should start fine, you might want to charge the battery, & change the oil. also, buy some gas additive called sta-bil & add to the exsisting gas, gas gets unstable after 3 months, & sta-bil takes care of that.

if you have triple a, i would have it towed to your regular service station. there they can check it out, and then start it for you. any other work that needs to be done on the car can be done at the same time. you will have peace of mind.

I would call a dealer and ask this question. But chances are your battery is dead. If the battery is dead it wont turn over anyway.

I would check the oil, then turn on the ignition, and then turn it back off. start to crank it but then stop. Start to crank it and then stop.. Then crank it all the way.
