I did a lesson on water pollution that the students loved. I used a book called "Oil Spill" by Melvin Berger for 5th grade. This was a great book for demonstrating the amount of damage oil can do to our environment. I then had the students do their own "oil spill" clean up. I took a plastic shoe box and filled it with water and some oil. The students had to clean it up with a small sponge. This gave the students a small concept as to how difficult it is to clean up oil. You can put things like feathers and rocks into the "water" to have the students pull out and clean too. They will have an idea of how professionals need to deal with this serious problem. You can do this in groups of 4 or 5. They will still get the concept. The oil is difficult to clean off without hot water. Good luck!
