No offense to anyone else who answered, but I don't believe that that information is useful to someone who has never played before.

Honestly, there is nothing anyone can say here anyway that you can't find more easily elsewhere on the internet... except this.

Keep an open mind. It's not really a tactic but more of an attitude. If you've never played the game before, few things besides plain experience can really help you. You want to absorb every bit of information you can from YOUR play style. It will probably take a couple of days of play until you can completely understand your style.

Over time, keeping an open mind will let you be a more well informed player. Never fall into hype. Do your research before coming to any conclusions. There will always be those players that say woodsball sucks or speedball sucks or pumps suck or CO2 sucks. People will tell you that one style of play is superior to another. Some websites make it seem like you HAVE to choose a position to be effective, and some sites tell you to be a complete asshole on the field. Do not listen to any of it. Do your research, and by research, I mean playing. That is the best advice I think anyone can give you. Telling you specific techniques like being quiet and how to handle attacks and stuff mean nothing if you don't have a little bit of experience.

Another good thing to do is be confident. New players have the tendency of doing many of the following bad things.

1) Bunching up in one bunker. If a person gets an angle on the bunker, all of you are finished.

2) Facing away from the action and rarely looking out. See what they are doing as much as you can. Without vision, you have nothing. You'll understand what I mean if you try to look out more often.

3) Lacking confidence. If you see a chance to move up and get an angle, it would be advisable to do it. Motion is a huge part of paintball. You'll never learn how to asses if it's safe to move somewhere if you don't take a few chances.

4) Worry too much about tactics.

Forget it. Just try to have fun your first time out. It's ok to do a few stupid things to try to get an advantage. If you're afraid to take action, you wont have much fun.

Now for some practical stuff.

Safety and Sportsmanship

A few rules to abide by, both written and unwritten.

NEVER IN YOUR LIFE should you take off your mask while a live marker is on the same side of the safety nets as you. If you're already out, you can still get shot. A newb tendency is to raise the mask immediatly after getting shot. For your own safety, do not do this. Wait until you get to a designated safe zone, or that the ref agrees that it's ok for everyone to put their markers on safety, but their barrel bags on, and take the masks off.

Keep your hand off the trigger when you're not playing. Just to prevent misfires.

The ref's word is FINAL. Do not argue with the refs for any reason (unless they tell you to do something that is not safe). If a ref is consistantly doing stupid things, then complain to the manager.

Never let anyone point a barrel at you in a safe zone. If someone does, tell him to put his gun down. If he refuses, go to a ref. Even barrel condoms don't fully prevent a shot from doing damage to a person.

Don't wipe. Cheaters are scum at most paintball fields. If a shot hits you and breaks, no matter where or when, call yourself out. You can always play another game. However, you can't always gain back lost respect.

Congradulate players who make a good move on you and don't overreact to someone who overshoots you. If someone takes a good shot at you, yell back "Nice shot" or something. People always appreciate those kinds of things. If someone overshoots you, you have a right to be angry, just don't go too far with it or people will give you crap. Just calm down, and don't let the pain get to you.

I hope this helps. I believe that safety and ettiquite are more important for a new player to learn than anything else.

One more suggestion. This is more of a personal preference Don't call paintball war games. It's just paintball. Even scenario games are still just paintball. We are not training for war, so please don't call it that.

Also, paintballs are not bullets. Calling them so isn't really a PC problem, it just irks experienced players.

And about your adversaries. I highly doubt you're going against pros, unless you're going to be at their home field and they want to play against the locals. You're probably just playing with regular players. Having jerseys and fast guns does not make a group of people pros. They just like that kind of equipment.

Again, have fun. I wish you the best of luck.

I am a seasoned paintballer. The only tips I can give is to play very defensively. Stay behind the back bunkers and shoot like hell, let them come to you. Pick them off as they are moving from bumper to bumper. If your field has a snake (a bunch of bunkers lined up on one side of the field) you can often use that. You can get BEHIND the enemy and pick them off undetected. However, the snake is very popular, so expect to meet a few people behind those bunkers as well. Stay low, and shoot often. If you do not need to pay for extra balls then shoot like there's no tomorrow. If you are forced to switch bunkers, do so very cautiously and signal your teammate to cover you by firing across the field as you make your switch. As you switch bunkers run like hell and SLIDE behind the bunker, remembering to stay low. If you stay visible for more that two seconds at a time against a professional team, you will undoubtedly get picked off.

If you are playing in the woods, and not on a paintball field, move around a lot. If you stay in one spot your goggles will fog up and become difficult to manage. Camoflauge is the key. Get low, blend in, and pick off the enemy as they run by. If you get fog-less goggles you can just lay in one spot, like in a bush, and wait until an unsuspecting enemy walks by. The woods are so much fun to play in, but the fog is a huge factor. The person above me said to be quiet, that usually won't be an issue. Paintballers tend to communicate by yelling and shuffling about, so you won't have to worry about an enemy hearing you unless they're hiding in the bushes. If it's a professional team, I guarentee they will have fog-less goggles, so maybe you'd want to pick up a pair.

Use logic and use your own good judgement. Good luck!

well, you friends and you can team-up by doing some ambushs to them.let say ur team have 5 peoples, then let 2 peoples(B Group) become as an ambush team.another 3(A Group) will be the back-up team.
in A Group, let one person be as the backup for the other 2 members in the A groups.this is to protect all of ur members if they are empty and need to reload.make sure he is a quick person because he will handle the situation for maybe for few seconds.someone needs to monitor the opponents' player right?
as for the B Group, let them prepare behind ur team.shot for a while, then stop. let the Bgroup positioning themself behind ur team(a group) . the opponents' will come to A group to attack them.so, what B group do?
ambush them!!!
i used this strategies before against states players and my team and i won the match.nobody got hitted.hahahaha..
another one is, if u want to walk to them, walk in straight line(kamikaze- dare to die) style.not recommended.
another one is position ur members in "V-shaped" position. the one on the middle will be the leader. the rest will bcome as an ambusher. place two people in the middle and let the rest hide from them.
have fun!!!

One tip would be to communicate and work as a team, hand signals would be very helpful. It would also be helpful to know your battlefield so you can formulate a strategy.
If these guys are really good, they will have several offensive plans, you must have some defensive as well as offensive strategy. Look at your offensive tactics and plan defenses for them. If you see them using one you have studied, you will already know how to defend against it. I would prefer to take a defensive position and see their movements.

make sure to be quiet!!! walk by rolling your feet from heel to toe to minimize the noise you make when walking. and use your terrain for natural camoflauge and hiding spots. and don't cry when you get shot, which will happen since you're playin against the pros.......
