It started out way back when cash was the only means of payment. When payent was even dollar amounts it was so easy for the clerk to just stick the money in his pocket. So a store owner deducted one penny so the clerk would have to give change .. Thereby needing to open the cash register and this idea just stuck. Before sales taxes of course.. :)

I think it has to do with the staitions trying to make it look like as much as possible that thee price is based on alot of precice calculation and not what someone feels like on the day.
Odd numbers make a rice look mow acurate thatn even ones.
(Exept for the overused exception of 99 Cents)

Its calculated by a percetage rate..it usually just comes out that way..
Remember that it is 1.97 and 9/10th so basically its even.

Its a pysch thing they play on you . You feel better paying 2.99 than 3.00 , or 2.19 instead of 2.20
