It is about a dream of total utopia and total peace in this world and the universe. If you were around when it was written that would help you understand. I just dug it out and put it on before I answered this. I haven't listened to it in years.
Thanks

The key, of course, is the first three words of the song, "Well, I dreamed..." Beyond that I would suspect that few people other than Neil would know. I lost my album several years ago, by the liner notes on the back cover alluded to the music on the After the Goldrush album being based on a screenplay credited to, my memory is a little sketchy here, Dean Stockwell. I don't believe the film was ever made. The only movies that I can think of that were either made by or with Neil were 'Journey Through the Past', 'Rust Never Sleeps', 'Human Highway', 'Greendale', and 'Heart of Gold'. Neil also appears in Martin Scorsece's fine movie with The Band called 'The Last Waltz' in which he and Joni Mitchell perform an absolutely stunning version of 'Helpless'. As with many great songs by Neil and others, the interpretation is up to the listener. Neil has written a lot of songs whose meaning is quite clear, but, I must admit, this one is a bit vague.
"...all in a dream, all in a dream, the loading had begun, flying Mother Nature's silver seed to a new home in the sun..."

Hey Law Man~ How does one choose between these two superlative works??? I consistently choose one and then the other. So sorry ~ they're both in first place! And this is why... "Harvest" is FABULOUS. But I may have worn it out if you know what I mean... but it's still FABULOUS. And "After the Gold Rush" ... I came into later, and play it more *these days*, and I love it just as much because ~ you guessed it ~ it's FABULOUS, too. This would be like asking (me): Which do you like better? Dark side of the moon -or- Wish you were here? While DSOTM may have "stronger" songs... I generally connect more with WYWH ~ but life without DSOTM... Unthinkable.

I always interpreted the song as a doper's comedown. He's dreaming, with strange imagery coming to him. He has come off the "rush" and is lying in the basement, seeing the end of the world. The time when it was written was a dark time for neil and for society at large, if you were one caught up in the drug-addled hippie dream of the late sixties. There certainly was a "gold rush" and after the rush was the crash. People started burning out, and apocalyptic visions were for many supplanting flowers and the "new dawn" of humanity. The song has war imagery in it (influenced by vietnam, perhaps), and hints at nuclear annihilation. See "Wooden Ships" by Jefferson Airplane for similarities ... as well as Neil's later album "On the Beach".

I believe that the song is about the destruction of the Earth by corporate polluters, ending with the necessity of mankind's escape to another planet.
